July 27, 2021: Upgrades to the Stirling Bluffs Intake Pump Station
Upgrades were recently completed at the Stirling Bluffs Intake Pump Station. This station pulls water from the Toadtown Canal and conveys it to the Stirling Bluffs Water Treatment Plant. The existing pump station had one electric pump with a backup pump run by a diesel engine using a drive shaft. This backup pump was used during power outages. The diesel engine drive shaft malfunctioned, causing damage to the engine and the backup pump.
The old diesel engine and pump were removed, and replaced with a new electric pump. A new generator has been installed to supply power to the pumps during power outages. In addition, a transfer switch was installed, allowing either pump to be used, as well as a variable frequency drive (VFD). The VFD controls power supplied to the pumps to match the output or flow required. This saves electricity and wear and tear on the pumps. An alternating switch was added to alternate use of the pumps to keep both running smoothly. Finally, hour meters were installed on the pumps to monitor overall use by period and lifespan.
These upgrades allow Del Oro to serve customers better by having two fully operable pumps, increasing service reliability, especially during an outage. The new generator can supply power to either pump, and can be turned on using a new switch at the water treatment plant.
Shown here is the old diesel engine, which powered the backup pump:
